One of the most common complaints I hear from my patients is that they are frustrated about having ongoing dental problems and they have lost faith in dentistry. Even after spending more and more money on their teeth, they continue to have problems. They are also upset that their dental treatment doesn’t seem to last very long leading to their ultimate fear: that they may lose some or all of their teeth despite taking what they thought was proper care of their teeth.

I empathize with these patients and I want them to understand that there are very good reasons for their history and that it is not that they have bad teeth or that they are doomed to lose their teeth. There are several reasons that dental treatment doesn’t last and most of them are not because of the patients; rather, many of the causes lie with the way we dentists are trained to diagnose and treat our patients.

Dentists want to help people but are trained to be “tooth fixers” and do not identify and eliminate all of the causes for the problem. This results in what I call “patchwork dentistry” which means that the dentist is repairing the immediate problem but not the cause. As all the causes of the problem have not been dealt with, the treatment cannot last very long.

Additionally, as people are very different, the same “fix” will not work for everyone. Our body chemistry and our heredity is unique and the stress we place on our teeth differs as well. 

When all the contributing factors are identified by the dentist and are dealt with appropriately, treatment should last many years. Once they have had their mouth restored to optimal dental health, people should be able to keep their teeth and gums healthy for their entire lifetime!

As days begin to warm up, we naturally start thinking of springtime and flowers. It is time to place your flower orders during Loveable Smiles 4th Annual Spring Flower Fundraiser to Benefit Children’s Dental Clinic at The Network of Community Ministries. The event is hosted by Loveable Smiles.

The Network Dental Clinic serves needy children in the Richardson Independent School District with free dental care. Dr. Korenman has been volunteering regularly at the clinic since it opened in January 2010. Your order of flowers will help support this worthy cause to aid local school children.

Choose from a variety of flowers including Begonias, Mexican Heather, Coleus, Impatiens, Lantana, Zinnias, Marigolds, Moss Rose, Periwinkles, Dusty Miller, and Dianthus in flats composed of 18 four-inch pots for a cost of $18. 

Other options include nine varieties of hanging baskets or assorted gallon options at only $8. These quality plants are grown and supplied by Bruce Miller Nursery, a local nursery. Orders are due in our office by Wednesday, April 11th. They will be ready for pick up on Friday, April 13th from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the Loveable Smiles parking lot.

“Students with dental needs who have no dental insurance or Medicaid are referred by the school nurse to the clinic,” says Dr. Korenman. “It is completely free of charge and run by volunteer dentists in the Richardson area like myself. It is our belief that children who are free of dental pain can eat healthier foods and their learning potential increases as they feel better.”

I am often told by patients that they have neglected their dental health due to their lack of having dental insurance. We at Loveable Smiles treat all patients whether they have dental insurance or they do not. Everyone who wants to be healthy can obtain treatment.

“Dental insurance” was never intended to improve anyone’s health. Sounds ridiculous, I know, but this is true. All this benefit actually does, is it provides financial benefits depending on the specific policy. Additionally, there are yearly limits that some cause some people to think that they must delay their treatment over several years time to receive their maximum benefits. Unfortunately, stretching the treatment over such a long time allows the problems to worsen, often significantly, and the discomfort and cost increase as well.

While it is nice if someone has dental benefits, in the long run, it is much more important to obtain the absolute best treatment available in a comprehensive way rather than trying to stretch out treatment over several years to receive more insurance benefit.

At Loveable Smiles we strive to help each patient to attain and maintain Optimum Dental Health. This means that any and all existing problems are corrected as well as the removal of any factors which will cause damage in the future – truly preventing problems from happening. After this state of health is achieved, we create a maintenance schedule for each individual so they can prevent recurrence of dental problems like cavities or gum infections. This maintenance program is much like what fitness trainers create for their clients after helping them become physically fit and is personalized for each patient.

It is ironic that there are many things in life that are beneficial and necessary to our health that are not “covered expenses”. That does not mean they are not important or necessary at all. All it means is that that particular policy doesn’t have a financial benefit.

What is Optimal Dental Health?

If you’re wondering what in the world Optimal Dental Health is, you have to understand that most people have been only partially taken care of by their dentists. 

You see, in dental school we are taught how to treat a variety of problems people may have with their teeth and gums and smiles, but we are NOT taught why so many people have ongoing problems for their entire lifetime.

Fifth Anniversary Cruise – Follow Us!

In celebration of our Fifth Anniversary of opening Loveable Smiles in Richardson, we are so filled with Gratitude for all of our patients, friends and family who have supported us. We are taking this opportunity to take the trip we have always dreamed of: a trip to The Holy Land!

We are going on a cruise which visits Rome, Athens and Mykenos, Greece, Ephasus, Turkey, Haifa and Jerusalem, Israel, Cyprus, Naples, Italy and then back to Rome. Wow!

We never thought we could actually be able to see all these places and we are so excited that we have decided to create a blog so we could share our experiences with all of you.

Debbie Carroll-Boyce is crowned Ms. Texas Senior America 2011

The 2011 Ms. Texas Senior America Pageant was held on August 13th in Dallas.  The Ms. Senior America pageant will be held October 2-7 in Atlantic City at Harrah’s Hotel. 

Loveable Smiles has been a supporter of the pagaent for many years. Cindy Korenman, V.P. of Marketing at Loveable Smiles, serves on the Board of directors for the Ms. Texas Senior America Pageant.

Cindy strongly believes in the ideals of the pageant: “The goal of our pageant is to empower and enrich the lives of our seniors – and we are re-defining the Senior Woman.  Our pageant re-defines the Senior Woman in the 21st century by drawing attention to their capabilities and achievements.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry summed up the essence of the goals of the Ms. Texas Senior America Pageant in his “2011 Greeting” in the Pageant Book, by stating that “it honors inner beauty by focusing on good works and volunteerism.”

From the Pageant website: “This is not a beauty pageant, but an event that represents ‘The Positive Image of Aging.’ Our Pageant salutes all senior women. Our goal is to enrich and empower the lives pf all seniors…These ladies have reached ‘The Age of Elegance’ and are the foundation of America.”

Cindy made it a personal mission to create and organize the distribution of fashionable carry-all bags for all the pageant contestants.
